Tuberculosis (TB), commonly known as consumption, is an infectious disease that can lie dormant for years. When active, the disease spreads as easily as the common cold. Strongly linked with AIDS, TB speeds up HIV infection and is the leading cause of death for people with AIDS.
The Effects
TB and poverty create a vicious cycle. Overcrowding, malnutrition and lack of effective healthcare make impoverished neighborhoods a breeding ground for the disease. Even those who survive the disease lose income while they fight the infection.
The Solution
Treating people who have active TB is the most effective way to limit its spread. TB treatment takes at least six months. Increased health services are needed to make sure patients complete the full treatment.
The Cost
For US$ 10, one person can be cured of TB. It's estimated that US$ 4 billion a year is needed to sufficiently address the TB epidemic in low and middle-income countries.
The Stats
- One-third of the world's population is infected with dormant TB
- 2 million+ people die every year from TB
